Apendix III - List of Gurbani Compositions

Guru Amar Das's hymns numbering next to those of Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Nanak Dev are incorporated in the Adi Granth under Mahalia 3. The aggregate has been estimated differently by different scholars: Bhai Kanh Singh of Nabha, 869; Dr S.S. Kohli, 907; Dr Taran Singh, 894; Dr B.S. Dil, 873. The variation in calculation, however, is of no significance and has arisen mainly from the employment of different techniques in calculation. Their distribution as per Ragas in the Adi Granth is as follows:

(i) Sri Rag: 31 Padas, 8 Ashtpadis and 33 Slokas.

(ii) Majh 32 Ashtparus and 3 Slokas.

(iii) Gauri (Guareri): I 8 Pad as and 8 Ashtpadis.

(iv) Gauri (Purbi): 5 Chhants and 7 Slokas.

(v) Asa: 12 Padas, I 5 Ashtpadis, 2 Chhants, 1 Kafi, 1 Patti.

(vi) Gujri: 7 Padas, l Ashtpadi, 18 miscellaneous hymns, 43 Slokas and 22 Pauris of Var.

(vii) Bihagra: 33 Slokas.

(viii) Wadhans: 9 Padas, 2 Ashtpadis, 6 Alauhnis, 4 miscellaneous hymns, 40 Slokas.

(ix) Sorath: 12 Padas, 3 Ashtpadis and 48 Slokas.

(x) Dhanasri: 9 Padas.

(xi) Suhi: 4 Ashtpadis, 7 Chhants, 15 Slokas, 20 Pauris of Var.

(xii) Bilawal :6 Padas, 1 Ashtpadi, 1 Satvara, 10 Pauris of Var, 24 Slokas.

(xiii) Ramkali: 5 Padas, I Ashtpadi, 39 Pauris of Anand, 24 Slokas, 21 Pauris of Var.

(xiv) Maru: 5 Padas, I Ashtpadi, 24 Soble, 23 Slokas, 22: Pauris of Var.

(xv) Bhairo: 21 Padas and 2 Ashtpadis.

(xvi) Basant: 19 Padas.

(xvii) Basant (Hindol): 1 Pada.

(xviii) Sarang: 3 Ashtpadis and 23 Slokas.

(xix) Malar: 13 Padas, 3 Ashtpadis, and 27 Slokas.

(xx) Parbhati: 7 Padas and 2 Ashtpadis.

(xxi) Slokas in addition to those in Vars: 67.

Total: 171 Padas, 91 Ashtpadis, 20 Chhants, 96 misc. hymns, 410 Slokas and 85 Pauris of Vars.
